Beyond the Veil

Of Divine Duplicity Book 1

by Chloe Marie

Genre: Dark Fantasy / Mythical Creatures

Gods. Monarchs. Fae. Humankind.

All will answer for their sins until only one remains.

Since my arrival at Briarsmourne Manor at nine years of age, I have lived in a comfortable haze beneath the boot of my uncle, Lord Fjord of Quasaria.

I obeyed. I remained quiet. I followed the laws as they’ve been taught to me.

Until now.

The whispers too strong, the desires too deep. I craved this taste of power as intrinsically as I needed air, and no laws would forbid me of my favors this day. Hadn’t I known the consequences of this act of faeadrie? Hadn’t I agreed to the murder I committed when I approached the young boy with my dagger and impaled his skull with it?

Despite the bite of warning, the fates decided long ago that I would betray my kind and embrace faeadrie. Too late, I have found that in this world of men and monsters, there are crueler prophecies dictating my fate than the actions of my temptations alone. And in the end, is it the world by whom the gods have forsaken which will pay, or will humanity prevail in exchange for the twin of my soul’s flame?

5 out of 5

Y’all, the blurb doesn’t fully prepare you for the wild ride this book is, or how you’ll love every moment of it. I think what I love most about this, is there isn’t really a clear hero. All of the characters, at the very least, fall into a gray area, some darker than others. The flaws make me love them all the more, even the ones who seem to be trying to push everything in a massively destructive direction. I’d say other than the vivid descriptions, the characters depth and complexity might be this book’s greatest strength. That said, there are plenty of twists, turns, and tension, and the pacing is even throughout. The plot is interesting and will keep you engaged, but the vividness of the world and depth of characters are what will keep you engaged from cover to cover. Cannot wait until we get book two!
