Although in the grand scheme of things, this only scratches the surface, this book is a decently introductory dive into Welsh mythology and deities. If you’re only interested in one part, then this is easy to navigate to the chapter you’re most interested in reading. However, if you’re a beginner or completely new to the pantheon, I highly recommend reading this cover to cover. Starling has done plenty of research, as well as weaving in her own experiences. (If you’d like to do your own further research, there’s an extensive bibliography to pull from). I greatly appreciated the notes on cultural appropriation (a growing concern in today’s ever more connected world), and the pronunciation guide at the back. The most interesting chapter for me was the one on celebrations, and being able to compare the traditions and rituals with those from other pantheons I’m familiar with. Starling’s writing style makes it easy to read, and this is definitely something I’d recommend to pagans and curious people alike!

I am originally from Ynys Môn (Anglesey), North Wales. I grew up enchanted by the rich folk tales and legends of my culture, so much so that I made the decision in my youth to explore Paganism and Witchcraft. I became good friends with Kristoffer Hughes, chief of the Anglesey Druid Order, and began not only studying the myths and legends that inpsired me deeply, but also devoting myself to the Gods and Goddesses woven within our tales. I now identify myself as a modern-day Swynwraig (Welsh Folk Witch), and I spend much of my time promoting the magical culture of Wales via my writing, online content, and by presenting talks and workshops at various events.
