King’s Hill

A Horror Novel

by Josh Hanson

When Sadie Roth takes a part time job teaching creative writing at King’s Hill, the local prison, she finds herself in close contact with Edward Joseph Mills, a local boogeyman and convicted serial killer. As Mills uses the course as a vehicle to finally tell his story, Sadie finds herself drawn into a strange world of money, violence, sex, and magic.

Interweaving Mills’ hard-boiled narrative of occult murder with Sadie’s all-too-human story of marriage, friendship, and disability, King’s Hill asks what we owe to the truth, and what we’d be willing to sacrifice in the face of both human and supernatural horror.

REVIEW

5 out of 5

If I’m being totally honest, I was a little blindsided with how well I could relate with Sadie – her struggles, her curiosity, her love for writing and reading. It’s rare to see a work of fiction really dive into how exhausting and difficult it can be when you’re fighting your body for every little thing you’re able to do, and how much recovery time it can take when you do get to do things. I felt truly seen while reading this, and I have to applaud the author for that. That said, while I have days when I’m as bad off as Sadie is, and I have some better ones, I don’t think I could articulate the bad ones as well as Hanson has done here. You can almost feel her pain and frustration oozing off the pages at times. The story itself is complex, and draws you in quickly with a mysterious serial killer, and the odd twisting between past and present. I loved the occult aspect that’s woven in, how it adds another layer to the serial killings of the past. No spoilers, but if you enjoy occult horror and true crime about serial killers, you’re going to want to snag this!
