Mythology and fairy tales? Count me in! I was a little nervous about how the no spice would play out, as I’ve been reading a lot of spicy retellings lately, but this ended up being a refreshing change. Rhea is an amazing FMC, rebellious, pushed into a role she never expected or wanted, and determined to save the oceans from the Dark Water. She’s got a lot of depth, and while she may live beneath the waves, she feels so real! Kai caught my interest too, he’s a bit mysterious, and although he isn’t anywhere near Rhea’s ally at first, watching them interact and their relationship change as they work together to save the oceans made for a fascinating facet of the story. Spruill did an amazing job keeping the tension high and the story moving forward at a decent pace. The fade to black scenes didn’t distract from any pieces of the plot, and leave room for your imagination to fill in the blanks. If you enjoy fairy tale retellings, you’ll want to grab this one!
