Chimera

The Phoenix Scar Trilogy Book 1

by Ben Caskey

A boy on the brink of manhood. A magical orange scar. An old feud that could threaten everything. Chimera wants nothing more than peace and prosperity for his tribe, but trouble is brewing in Aragath when food and land run short and everyone seems to want a piece of it. His father isn’t able to maintain the delicate peace needed, and if something isn’t done soon, his people could face extinction. Chimera desperately tries to protect his family and his allies, all the while hunting for the truth about the mysterious scar on his arm. When he’s forced into a war he can’t hope to win, will an age-old mystery hold the key to victory?

REVIEW

4 out of 5

This was an interesting coming of age/fantasy, and I’m curious to see where the series will go. I enjoyed the story overall, the plot doesn’t drag at all, which is nice. Chimera is exactly what you’d expect from a teenage boy, and I appreciate that he’s true to that in his actions. (Although at times that makes him difficult to like, I can understand the reasoning behind making his character that way). I think my only real complaint is I would’ve liked to know more about the world and how things work. Overall, I think this would be great for teens who enjoy fantasy, as they’d likely be able to relate more to Chimera than older readers.
