“I want to escape. Soon. Before they shoot me up again.”  

“I doubt that’s going to happen. They take a lot of precautions. There’s…no way out of here.”  

“There’s always a way.”  

Todd moved up to his hands and knees, and then he sat back on his heels. “None of us have even come close. They’d kill us first.”  

“If I find a way…”  

He stood up. “I’m in. I’ll follow you, Austin.”  

“Why?”  

“I don’t know. The weird connection we have. You’re sexy as hell. Doesn’t matter.” He sighed and turned toward the door. I didn’t want him to leave. I wanted to wrap him up in my arms and protect him. These were feelings I’d never had about anyone else, and I didn’t know what to do with them. I was a loner. I’d learned long ago I couldn’t trust anyone but myself. I wanted to trust him, though. “Maybe getting killed trying is better than accepting a fucked-up fate.”  

A noise in the hall made him jump. He spread his legs into a wider stance, crouching a bit and looking very feline.  

“Todd?” I stood up.  

“Gotta go.” He lunged at me and kissed me quickly. “We’ll talk later. Don’t do anything stupid.”  

He slipped out the door and shut it behind him. I wanted to follow, but the door locked when it shut.
