Special Feature: Legends of the Secret World

Young Adult Dark Fantasy

by Blodwedd Mallory

Prequel: The Black House
On a dare from Danny Dufresne, a member of the League of Monster Slayers, Innsmouth Academy students Carter and Wedd decide to investigate a haunting.
Inside the mysterious, burned-out shell called the Black House, Wedd must confront her fears, figure out why an unquiet spirit still haunts the wreckage, and escape the ghost’s attempts to recreate the scene of her own demise.
This novella is a story about Blodwedd Mallory’s experiences as an Innsmouth Academy student prior to the events of October 31, 2011, and a prequel to the Unofficial Legends of The Secret World urban fantasy/horror book series.

Vol 1: Unofficial Legends of The Secret World Omnibus: Templar Edition (Books 1-3)
Dark days are coming and Wedd wants to fight.
Blodwedd Mallory’s lifelong ambition is to be an agent for the Templars, a powerful occult secret society. She’s got the right family, the right education, and–unfortunately for the rest of humankind–the right timing.
Terrifying events around the world foreshadow a catastrophic showdown between the forces of the supernatural and humanity. Whether the omens say Armageddon, Ragnarok, or Doomsday, they all point to the End of Times. And only those like Wedd, who were granted magickal powers by Gaia–the lifeforce of Earth–know what is happening.
Wedd must combat the Filth, a dark force from the outer reaches of the Universe that threatens to devour the world. Investigating the mysteries of ages past and fighting monsters from myth and nightmare will push her harder than she could ever have imagined.
But she’s just one young woman in the Templars’ secret battle against this new, cosmic enemy. She has friends in the rival factions–the Dragon and Illuminati–who want to help, but first they have to overcome the traditional distrust between them.
When the Filth comes in earnest, the Templars won’t be able to stem the tide alone.
Dark days are coming and with it the endless night.

Book 1: To Sir, with Love
When the world ends, the fog rolls into Solomon Island and the dead start to rise. Innsmouth Academy senior Blodwedd Mallory fights to save her school from the destruction. But can she uncover secrets of the Academy’s dark history in time to stop Mal’un the Accursed from destroying the headmaster and preventing her graduation and initiation as a Templar?
It’s Samhaintide, and things are tough right now at Innsmouth Academy. The aftermath of the mysterious fog has left most of the faculty dead and the students running around the Academy grounds as zombies. Only a few remain safely behind the protective wards of the Academy’s Administration Office.
Wedd and her best friend Gypcie spend their time scavenging the campus for supplies and charging the anima wards that keep the marauding zombies out of Innsmouth Academy and the mighty magical tomes of the Academy’s library in. They have mastered the art of doing that while dodging an unruly herd of dangerous familiars, cut loose from the control of the now-dead students who made them. However, one wrong step or misfired spell could mean disaster.
To make matters worse, an old skeleton in the headmaster’s closet reveals itself, and a powerful demon wants vengeance for the unpaid blood debt. When Mal’un the Accursed trespasses the failing Academy wards to collect on the debt, it’s only a matter of time until blood is spilled. With the support of Gypcie and the other Academy survivors, Wedd must figure out how to exorcize the infernal wraith without sacrificing the headmaster’s life.
Not only must she vanquish the wraith, but Wedd still needs to prove her blood magic skills and get her math homework done so she can graduate and join the Templars in London in the spring. That may be one more task than she can manage. So far, the prognosis isn’t looking good.
Dark days aren’t coming for Wedd and the Innsmouth Academy…they’re already here.

Book 2: London Underground
When she leaves Innsmouth Academy to join with the Templars, Blodwedd “Wedd” Mallory hopes to finish her training and be assigned to the field as an agent like her mother. But, will her chances be sidelined by Special Assignment Supervisor Dame Julia and Master-of-Arms Brigadier Lethe when a deadly supernatural bomb in Tokyo throws the world into an uproar and her mother goes missing?
A thousand years ago, knights gathered in the Holy Land, drawn to the purported site of the First Temple, King Solomon’s Temple.
From all over Christendom, men heeded the call for brave, true fighters to protect those pilgrims who could not protect themselves. To defend the values of their way of life. To cast the infidels out.
Brave.True.Templar.
Blodwedd Mallory is not yet a Templar, but she wants to be.
She wants to fight dragons and knows they can be beaten. She’s heard the stories.
“For England and St. George!”
What Wedd has forgotten is that back in those days, knighthood was granted by the rulers of the kingdoms, by those who wanted land and power for themselves.
She has already received a higher calling from Gaia to look beyond the mundane into the hidden magical corners of the secret world. To hear the buzzing of the anima and traverse the world tree, Agartha. To rise up and join those like her to protect humanity. To push back the gathering forces of darkness threatening life everywhere.
Wedd may get what she thinks she wants. She may even have the chance to prove she’s brave and true, fight the war against darkness, and cast enemies from the Temple.
But, she has already received a higher calling—from Gaia herself. Wedd just doesn’t know what that means yet.

Book 3: Dead in the Water
When Blodwedd Mallory returns to her old stomping grounds to deal with the supernatural menace threatening Solomon Island, she expects to spend her time killing zombies and helping the survivors in Kingsmouth. But, will her attempts to investigate the mysterious fog and the invading draug horde be thwarted by her tardy Templar partner, a dangerous contagion, and an old flame, Dragon agent Renee “Hadad” Laveau?
Independence Day. A time for fireworks and family. A celebration of the indomitable spirit of the men and women who fought for freedom to build their own nation.
Nearly 400 years to build its foundations since settlers first landed on Plymouth Rock have made America strong. Patriots and soldiers stand ready to rebuff invaders from its shores.
But this invasion is different. You can’t fight what won’t die. You can’t kill what’s already dead.
Long before the immigrants, Vikings landed on these shores. And they brought with them ships and strong men to explore the boundaries of this new coastline, far to the west of their homelands. They brought their traditions and stories to sustain them on the journey.
Some didn’t make it back.
The ocean is full of the remains of those brave explorers, those wooden longboats. And other, darker things.
The Viking stories tell what happens to the angry dead lost at sea. So do the seagulls and the tide—if you know how to listen.
The dead are coming back to Solomon Island.
I am about to learn the old stories firsthand.

Book 4: Into the Inferno
Hadad Laveau thinks he’s in hell.
Dragon agent Renee Hadad Laveau has anger problems—and a new partner sure to make him lose his cool.
When he’s assigned to investigate reports of fiery rifts on Red Oak Beach, Hadad is certain that training new agent Saffey Williams won’t make the job any easier. The Dragon are hard taskmasters and have no tolerance for failure. He’s learned that himself the hard way.
But there’s no training manual for this problem. Killing demons, trying to close the rifts, and chasing down a rogue magician leaves Hadad with no room for error—and no patience for a new agent’s mistakes. He can’t afford to let this trail go cold.
In a secret world where everything is true and old gods roam the Earth, Hadad and Saffey must work together to find where the portal magus has opened the door to the hell dimensions and left it open. Failure will mean the end of everything.
Hadad thinks he’s in hell. Turns out he’s about to be right.

Book 5: Hard Cleft
Wedd is seeking a sword. The sword.
The sword that can start wars and end them. The sword that can break worlds or mend them. The sword that calls out to the living and the dead.
Having confronted cosmic evil and discovered what she thinks is the cause of the zombie outbreak in Kingsmouth, Wedd is ready to get back to work. She’s anxious to follow the trail of the glowing artifact recovered by the crew of the Lady Margaret, a ship which has since disappeared.
But, with her mother still missing, her father a mystery, a rogue sorcerer on the loose, and tensions between the factions at an all-time high, she may be facing more bad news than she can bear.
She is cut off from her friends. Her partnership with Sevenoir is strained. The Templars are hiding the truth about her family. With no one to turn to, she may have to go it alone.
Will she find the sword, but lose something far more important?

Ratings & Reviews

Prequel: The Black House
5 out of 5
The Black House has one of my favorite opening lines. The theme is haunted houses, and everyone knows ghosts are what makes it all more real. Filled with chills, this is a fun, quick read for anyone who likes a little spooky in their lives. This short story can be enjoyed even if you haven’t read the series (I haven’t yet, but I’m looking forward to it).

Book 1: To Sir, with Love
5 out of 5
To Sir, with Love will keep you turning pages until the wee hours of the morning. Even if you haven’t read the prologue, after this book you’ll be hooked on the series. It’s a great introduction to Wedd (although I really recommend reading the prologue). With enough chilling monsters to go around, this is the perfect spooky read.

Book 2: London Underground
5 out of 5
London Underground is thrilling. The further I get into this series the more invested I get in the world and Blodwedd’s story. A unique narrator, Wedd makes it easy to get caught up in the book and lose hours. Between supernatural and mundane struggles, there’s never a dull moment, this second installment has something for all who love secret societies and believe magic is still out there.

Book 3: Dead in the Water
5 out of 5
Dead in the Water will take you back to where it all started. A familiar setting but new problems await Blodwedd in this latest installment. I’ve loved watching Wedd grow and mature from soon-to-be graduate to now a Templar. This latest heart-pounding adventure does not disappoint, and draws you further into Wedd’s world where monsters and magic are all too real. A must read for those who love the paranormal and legends of old.

Book 4: Into the Inferno
5 out of 5
Into the Inferno is a great new installment with a bit of a twist. After following Blodwedd around for three books, we now get to know more about boy friend (maybe boyfriend?) Hadad. What better way to get to know him than with Hell literally opening on earth? I really enjoyed being able to learn more about someone so important to Wedd. Hadad was relatable even though the problems he faces down aren’t exactly ordinary. Thanks to the shift in focus you can easily just pick up with the series here, but I highly recommend reading the earlier books too (if not first).

Book 5: Hard Cleft
5 out of 5
Hard Cleft is vibrant and captivating. I can’t believe I just finished book five! This installment is the most captivating thus far. Blodwedd is struggling with some self doubt, but that only makes her more human. Combined with a new challenge and a quest for an important blade, there’s never a dull moment, even when Wedd is in the practice arena. The descriptions are so vivid I felt like I was watching it all unfold (even though I have never even seen the game). Of course if you haven’t read any of the others you really should so you can understand the full backstory leading up to this!

About the Author:

Blodwedd Mallory is the Secret World alter ego of Amber McKee, a Utah-based writer, editor, and Jill-of-all-trades.
Over the course of her career, she’s been a newspaper reporter, movie reviewer, bartender, tarot reader, magazine editor, advocacy trainer, instructional designer, service delivery manager, and more.
Now, she realizes what she probably should have been all along was a video game developer. She assuages that pain by creating urban fantasy fiction books based on her in-game experiences of an urban fantasy/horror video game. Go figure.
She lives with her hubby and two rescue pups in a formerly haunted house.
