A mage. A knight. A destiny…
When the Orcs lay siege to the Eyre, Evalyn’s family are murdered, and she finds herself the last surviving heir to the kingdom of Arogath. She has no choice but to flee the only place she’s called home. With Felix, a sworn bodyguard by her side, she desperately seeks refuge.
It’s not long before Evalyn discovers the brutal lengths the Orcs will go to in order to expand their territory, and with her people’s lives at stake, she is forced to unearth a long since buried magic. As she grapples to control her volatile powers and fill the role of queen, enemies rise in all corners of the kingdom—some with carefully curated disguises. And they are much closer than she thought.
Despite it all, Felix remains a constant. Her childhood friend, her loyal protector. With a war raging around them, she finds herself falling for him. And the cost of saving her people from a terrible fate might just be her heart.
Rating & Review
4 out of 5
The story opens with excitement, drawing you in and giving you hints as to who some of the players are and what they’re like. Then you’re swiftly dropped into the action with an entirely different kind of excitement – from revelry to war in the space of a few hours. It really sets the pace for the rest of the book, quite fast, with a lot of ground covered and characters introduced. It wouldn’t have hurt to have a few more lulls to develop the interpersonal connections a little more, but I must admit I enjoyed exploring the world and meeting the varied peoples who inhabit it. Evalyn and Felix are great MCs, they mesh together so well, and they face a daunting task – saving the kingdom, and making sure that Evalyn as rightful queen can safely take the throne and protect her kingdom. I love the idea of latent magic that has to be awakened, and Evelyn’s struggle to control the magic and not let it get destructively out of control. Felix is a great counterpart to her, determined to keep her safe, but still very aware of the social gap between them, even when on the run. If you enjoy romantasy with light spice and a princess meant to be queen who has fallen for her bodyguard while grappling with things bigger than her, you’ll want to grab this!
