Daughters of Men

Women’s Fantasy Fiction

by J. Martain

Forces stronger than hurricanes are at work in the Cape Fear.

For thirty-one years, Lila has hidden her extrasensory abilities, creating a small life in the same coastal North Carolina city where she was born. But her nightmares have grown worse, her angels still haven’t learned Morse code, and raising a thirteen-year-old genius requires the kind of mental focus that Lila has never quite mastered. Still, the abnormal seems fairly normal—until a strange young man appears and a new friend confides a shocking truth about her pregnancy.

Sal, on the other hand, has never attempted to hide. In his experience, humans do not see what they do not wish to acknowledge. He moves among them, identifying the aberrations as he always has, as he knows he must. This existence depends upon it. One choice made long ago, one decision born of guilt and fear, is now a secret he must protect—at any cost.

REVIEW

4 out of 5

I was absolutely fascinated by this story and the characters who are narrating it. I’ve never seen two such opposite narrators in one book before, but I love the contrast. I swear by the end of the first chapter, you feel like you’ve known Lila forever. She’s open, and you get some great insight into her, and her life. Sal feels more detached, and seeing his POV is so different. Although Sal’s side holds less emotions, that doesn’t make me not like him. It somehow works, but doesn’t make him feel painfully cold or distant. The plot moves along smoothly and fairly quickly, and I love the cross-over between paranormal and sci-fi. I loved this book, and I truly hope there are more to come!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

J. Martain is a coastal North Carolina native who spends most of her time questioning the way the universe and all the beings in it work. This often leads her down a deep research rabbit hole until she resurfaces with a new theory and a backstory to explain it. Her characters are sometimes human, sometimes not, but they prefer not to be judged on that criteria.
