The Exiled Otherkin

Minte and Magic Adventure #1

by D. Lieber

Orphaned, betrayed, stripped of magic, and exiled. Can she survive with powerful and vengeful Fae still after her?

Staying on the move is all half-Fae Ember can think about when she’s stripped of her magic and exiled from Faerie. Forced into the foreign human realm, she takes a job on a merchant airship. Sure, her new position is dangerous, but not nearly as life-threatening as the murderous Faerie Queen. Besides, she’s always been able to handle any trouble thrown her way with a snide comment, a swift kick, and an apathy that protects her from caring about anyone or anything.

When the optimistic Reilley follows her, she tries to ditch the bothersome human. It isn’t long before his naivety, and his own penchant for trouble, makes her feel responsible for him. Always worried about encumbering others, Reilley has never stood up for himself in his life. But when he realizes Ember needs his protection just as much as he needs hers, he’ll do anything.

Getting attached goes against everything Ember has learned about survival, and getting attached to Reilley could put more than their hearts in peril.

Faeries, pirates, and traveling players meet in this steampunk fantasy adventure.

REVIEW

4 out of 5

I loved Ember from the start – she’s got a fire inside her. One evil fairy stepmother, one exiled princess, and one steampunk style airship with a few fae on the crew sets up an incredible adventure. The flashbacks give you some nice insight into Ember’s past, but are marked well enough that the transition from present to past and back isn’t confusing. Although this isn’t a light-hearted adventure, there’s plenty of adventure, and self-discovery along the way. Just don’t go in thinking fairies mean love and light. A great read overall.
