This was a fun, dark, new take on The Wizard of Oz. I loved Verity’s chapters, her view of the world, and how she has no real desire to go seeking out her past, even if fate has other plans. The three guys she meets are an interesting take on Dorothy’s companions on her way to the Emerald City. My heart was absolutely in my throat after the storm, when Verity meets the three, and things start to go truly sideways. I enjoyed getting to see things from the guys’ point of view as well, it was interesting to see how truly different they are in the way they think, and not just the way they act. My only real complaint is the formatting at the start of the chapters was difficult to read. The character who is giving you their POV has a drop letter as if it’s the start of the first paragraph, which was disorienting until I got used to it. However, if you’re looking for a deliciously dark retelling of a beloved classic, then pick this up, and remember why there’s no place like home.
