Dead Man’s Number
The Roadhouse Chronicles Book 3
by Matthew S Cox
Safety is at best a relative thing in 2073, fifty-one years after nuclear war scorched the world.
Kevin found a quiet little place to hole up with the woman who came to mean more to him than his lifelong dream, and a little girl she took in after the Virus wiped out her home. They’re well defended against bandits, raiders, and the occasional stray Infected.
But walls don’t face the sky, and all the guns in what’s left of the world won’t do a thing against a biological weapon dropped from an Enclave drone.
A message from a dead man disturbs this tenuous peace with a chance to stop the Virus for good, but it would send them right to the Enclave’s back yard. Tris can’t say no, and Kevin refuses to leave her side again, but they won’t bring a child along for such a dangerous ride.
Knowing it’s not only their lives, but the lives of everyone outside the Enclave at stake, they decide to hit the road once again, hoping their home―and their daughter―will still be there when they return.
REVIEW
5 out of 5
I didn’t think it was possible to get more wrapped up in Tris and Kevin’s story, or for the stakes to get any higher, but once again, Cox has proven me wrong. Things have changed so much since book one, and getting to see how Tris and Kevin especially have changed and evolved, and how Kevin’s goals shifted once he met Tris, has been one of my favorite parts of reading this series. I have to admit, it’s a little bittersweet knowing I’m leaving them all behind now that I’ve finished reading it. That said, this DID have a satisfying conclusion. No loose ends, or what ifs, everything is neatly tied up by the end, despite the rest of it keeping you on edge, and the twists making you wonder if you really know what’s coming next. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but this was easily the best one yet. The descriptions drop you right back into the world, as though you’d never left. If you enjoy dystopian fiction with a side of slight romance, you should start with book one, and enjoy the ride as you read through all three books.
