In the Woods, Dark & Deep

9 Stories of Speculative Fiction

by D. L. Rhodes

They all creep in, but some never come back out…

In the Woods, Dark and Deep…My Mother and Other Monsters…Can You See Me Now?
Speculative Fiction is a mixed bag–sometimes it’s Horror, other times Science Fiction or Fantasy or Magical Realism or even just a touch of weirdness tucked into the corners of everyday life. This story collection runs the gamut with characters like a monstrous mother from hell and a little boy who rises from the grave, in addition to modern day witches and ogres. Some of them are deadly serious, others are playful. And then there are those who are full of the stuff of which nightmares are made. Each story asks—what makes these strange people tick? And deep down, what do they hunger for most? No matter who or what they are, they each creep lightly through the shadowed landscape of a fictitious world, tiptoeing through the reader’s imagination, where the rules of reality must bend to allow speculation in its most dreamlike and magical form.

REVIEW

4 out of 5

This was an interesting, strange, and at times gross collection. If you have a weak stomach and strong imagination, then I suggest skipping this one. (You can practically smell the first story pouring off the page, in a very gross way). I do love the imagination that went into this – the stories are unique, and different. Unfortunately, some of them were a bit clunky, and at times I had to re-read things because I was a little lost. Overall, a great collection of speculative fiction.
