Review: Cutthroat Cheerleader

Cutthroat Cheerleader

Young Adult LGBTQIA+ Thriller

by Zachary Ryan

In the sleepy town of Townsend, Washington, there was an act so gruesome that no one would ever be the same. What heinous crime do I speak of? Skylar Torres thinking she could pull off a crop top with that pudgy body of hers. Oh, did you think I was going to say my murder. Well, I thought it was more sensational than anything else, but the real scandal was who killed me and why.

You should already know my name since it was on everyone’s lips once they found me with my throat ripped out. People thought they should have only feared me, but the Liberty Lion’s cheer squad knew one thing, hunt or be hunted.

No one’s hands were truly clean from all the dirt and blood on them. Be safe, watch your back and always remember, Happy Hunting.

I wasn’t sure what exactly I was getting into with this one. The synopsis sounded interesting, but I was worried I wasn’t going to be the target audience. Was I ever wrong! I really enjoyed this book. The opening line made me laugh, and I knew I was in for a ride. Madison is a great narrator, and she definitely embodies what I’d expect from your stereotypical ‘Queen B’. (Seems like some things haven’t changed that much since I graduated HS). I have to admit I’m impressed with how captivated Ryan kept me with this murder mystery set against the backdrop of HS drama and teenage angst. Without spoilers lets just say the characters stay true to themselves to the very end, which I appreciate given that most of them are teenagers (and really how much did you change during HS?) Overall definitely recommend!
