EXCERPT The limestone cliffs are jagged and unwelcoming from the boat. The small entrance to the cave is even less welcoming from this view. Celine tenses under my arms, and I squeeze her tighter to me. “Lean back, everyone, so you do not hit your head on the rocks,” the boat guide instructs. Celine leans back into me, as I lean into the back of the boat. The oars scraping against the side of the boat are heavy as we head into darkness. We pass under the walls of the cave with inches to spare. The sun disappears as darkness takes over. Inside the cave, bright aquamarine colors dance in the water. Finally able to sit up, we see a few other boats drift lazily in the cave. “The waters are pristine,” Celine whispers. “Stunning.” The water reflecting off her face is what’s stunning. She’s still leaning back into me, not quite ready to let go in this tiny cave. Voices echo off the walls as we take in the crystal waters. “I don’t think the water at the beach is this clear.” The water whirls and sparkles with the motion of the boat. It’s like thousands of gleaming diamonds are floating just beneath the surface. “Thank you for coming with me, Celine. I’m glad I got to experience this place with you,” I whisper softly into her ear. She grabs my hand and places a kiss in the center of my palm. “I should be thanking you. I get to have all these new and wonderful experiences I wouldn’t have if I was with my usual group.” Her deep brown eyes are mirrors for the water. Now that we have this thing between us, her eyes give her away. I love seeing how happy she is on this adventure with me. These last few trips, I was left to explore on my own. Or I just stayed near the hotel and did any planning from afar. But having Celine at my side now makes these little side trips infinitely better. I can be carefree with someone at my side.
